The events leading up to Darcy seeking out Marceau unfolded as follows.

Darcy was well aware that Ryan would not leave Marceau alone. Concerned for her safety, Darcy kept track of her schedule, although he hadn't assigned someone to spy on her like Ryan had. He made sure to know all of her public engagements, one of which included her visit to the theater where Pitoll's troupe performed.
