“I don’t know. Lillis, how much do you know about this?”
“I don’t know much either. But I’ve heard that anything that exists in this world can come out of it.”
“Anything, huh?”
Bathesia lightly tapped the box with her finger.
“Is this ability really that impressive?”
“Are you kidding me? If this is considered impressive, then Soccu’s ability to sleep is like divine power, isn’t it?”
“Is that so?”
Karos asked in surprise at Soccu’s casual response. Soccu nodded her head like a puppy.
“Yes! At least in terms of being able to sleep, I’m versatile! I can sleep without being disturbed by anything, even in the middle of a battlefield!”
“Isn’t that just fainting?”
It was a bit of an exaggeration to call it sleep. Bathesia suddenly remembered something and asked.
“But come to think of it, why did only your hand get burnt?”
“Are you saying I got burned?”
Karos twisted his face in response to Bathesia’s question. Bathesia waved her hand dismissively.
“No, not that. It’s just… it’s strange, isn’t it? Bryon is a divine mineral. You know that if you cut something with a weapon made from it, even a Demon King like you would be defeated, right?”
“Well, that’s true.”
In fact, there were Demon Kings who died after being cut by Bryon. No matter how much magic they poured into it, it was said that they were cut apart conceptually and had no way to resist. That Demon King died without leaving any last words.
In that sense, Karos was peculiar. He had caught it with his bare hands, and it wasn’t like his hand had turned into ashes or anything. Bathesia raised an eyebrow, looking interested.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any magic.”
“Is that so?”
Karos was an unusual demon with no magic, so it could have increased his resistance. Bathesia nodded as if she understood.
“Maybe because you’re a half.”
“Maybe…”
Karos was about to argue, but he stopped himself. The statement was true, so there was nothing to refute. Eventually, he changed the topic.
“Enough with the idle chatter. Should we continue opening this? Is there no other way?”
“Well…”
“It can’t be helped…”
“Sigh.”
Karos reluctantly lifted the box. It sounded like a joke, but this was his ability. No one else could open it except him. In the end, it meant that he had to keep opening a box that could contain something that would set A Demon King on fire.
“This is depressing…”
“It’s okay. Bryon won’t keep coming out, will it? Even if it does, it will just be a spectacle.”
“But isn’t that painful enough?”
He really didn’t like it, but there was no other way. Karos opened the box with a resigned look.
* * *
However, there were no screams or writhing in agony after that. It seemed like Bryon had used up all the luck and bad luck, and only miscellaneous items kept coming out.
“An old rusty sword, a rusty shield, a staff with only a hint of magic left… What’s this, a stone? How can something like this come out? Even though there’s no trace of magic, it’s a perfectly spherical shape created purely through craftsmanship.”
“Wow. How was this even made? It doesn’t even show any traces of magic. Can you create such a perfect spherical shape from a stone through pure craftsmanship alone?”
“So, what do we do with this? After all, it’s just a stone.”
Karos opened another box. Inside, there was a rotten orange.
“Sigh…”
Karos tossed the rotten orange, and the slimes rushed to devour it, rolling the decaying fruit around inside their bodies.
“Can they even digest that?”
“I don’t know. How many did we open so far?”
“Twenty.”
“Twenty, and the only thing worth using is Bryon.”
When Karos swung the old, rusty sword, it turned to dust with a “poof.” Bathesia watched in astonishment.
“You’re really too much, Demon King.”
“Now you get it?”
Karos opened another box, and a foul odor wafted out.
“…Trash is coming out now. Lillis.”
“I understand.”
Lillis disappeared for a moment and soon returned with cleaning tools to start tidying up. Karos pressed his temples.
“I really hate this…”
Having the ability to produce trash was just too much, and it felt like he was being toyed with. Lillis, who had already finished cleaning, calmly remarked,
“This box seems to produce conceptual items.”
“It seems that way. From Bryon to trash, it’s quite diverse.”
Soon, only one box remained unopened. Karos opened it with a sense of resignation. Inside, there was a necklace.
“This might be useful. Bathesia.”
“Let me see.”
Bathesia took the necklace that was thrown toward her. After examining it for a moment with her magic, she whistled.
“It seems like a jackpot.”
“Oh, really? What is it?”
“It blocks the wearer’s magical aura.”
“Is that so?”
“Try it on.”
Bathesia put the necklace around her neck, and the faint magical aura emanating from her disappeared.
“Wow…”
Karos’s face lit up. This item was quite useful. It would make it extremely difficult to distinguish between a human, or any humanoid demon when wearing this necklace. It could be useful for information gathering or espionage.
“Any limitations?”
“I’ll need to examine it in more detail, but based on what I’ve seen so far, there don’t appear to be any limitations.”
“Great. Two jackpots. Let’s finish opening the rest and tidy up.”
Karos roughly opened the last box, and out came a foul smell.
“…Trash again. Lillis.”
“Yes, Master.”
Lillis took care of the garbage, and Karos sighed.
“In the end, we got Bryon and a magical aura-blocking necklace. Is that all?”
After rummaging through the items that came out, Karos muttered to himself. Other than these two, everything else was either ambiguous or had no value except for decoration. It left him feeling uncertain.
“Thirty-two items in total. Bryon, the magical aura-blocking necklace, and the rest are all just trinkets.”
Karos continued to mutter as he sorted through the items. There were items he couldn’t quite assess, and unless he had more information, they were just odds and ends.
“After all, it’s still a lottery.”
Bathesia’s excited words were mixed with disappointment as Karos spoke with a sense of realism.
