Chapter 11: See a Doctor if You're Sick
Su Li bowed slightly, greeting Jun Mo with a polite gesture, then turned her head and pretended to admire the flowers.
Things couldn't be rushed. Let him know that she was skilled in medicine, and that would be enough for now.
Once she had created the medicine to cure his leg ailment, she would deal with it then.
Wei Yuanling gave Jun Mo a disappointed glance, sighed, and said, “Let’s go.”
He then turned to his two younger sisters, saying, “Tell Mother, Ziyan and I have business and need to leave first.”
“Farewell, Your Highness, King Jing!”
Once the two were out of sight, Wei Yuanyao pulled Su Li aside and whispered, “Cousin, don’t you think His Highness, King Jing, is a bit cold?”
Su Li was surprised. The young ladies of the capital often said King Jing was the most gentle and approachable man, as he always smiled. But it seemed her cousin had a different opinion.
Noticing Su Li’s surprise, Wei Yuanyao continued, “Really. Don’t be fooled by His Highness’s polite exterior; I just feel like his smile never reaches his eyes. You might think he’s easy to approach, but he never gets close to others.”
Su Li replied, “He’s a good person.”
“Huh?” Wei Yuanyao was taken aback by this response.
“I didn’t say he was bad, it’s just that I feel a little afraid of him,” Wei Yuanyao confessed, a little embarrassed.
Su Li smiled inwardly. No wonder she hadn’t said much with King Jing around.
Suddenly, Wei Yuanyao said, “By the way, Li’er, in two days, it will be the Qiong Flower Feast. Will you go?”
Su Li shook her head and replied, “I won’t go.”
Wei Yuanyao thought it was because of Su Li’s insecurity, so she quickly reassured her, “Li’er, don’t be afraid. I’m here, and no one will dare laugh at you! Just come with me, those girls are all so boring. They only care about powder and makeup, secretly looking down on me. Everyone avoids me except for Zhirou.”
Remembering she had to inspect the grain, Su Li politely refused again, “Cousin, I really have something to do. Please bear with me this time, and I’ll definitely go with you next time.”
Wei Yuanyao pouted. “Alright then.”
Thinking about her father’s return home today, Su Li chatted with Wei Yuanyao for a while in the garden, then went to visit Old Madam Wei to say her farewells.
When she got home, the servant told her that her father had returned and was in the main courtyard.
Su Li went straight to her mother’s courtyard.
Before entering, she heard the sound of Su Yue’s sweet voice.
“Father, you’re back! Yue’er missed you so much! I didn’t go anywhere today, just waiting for you to come home.”
Su Li sneered inwardly. This was a deliberate attempt to manipulate her father!
She had known her father wouldn’t return until the afternoon, so she had already gone to visit her maternal grandmother.
Su Li walked straight in.
Entering the courtyard, she called out brightly, “Father!”
Her eyes immediately reddened.
Looking at the man with still dark hair and dignified bearing, Su Li felt a lump in her throat.
Her father wasn’t a man of many words, and since her disfigurement, his coldness had made it even harder for him to approach her.
In her past life, she had insisted on marrying Zhao Huai’an, causing a huge rift with her father.
It was the first time she had seen this man cry, and yet she had been smug, thinking that, as Aunt Xia had said, as long as she didn’t give up, her father would eventually accept her true love.
After her marriage, she frequently visited her father, asking him to promote Zhao Huai’an.
Though her father had been reluctant, he had secretly helped her.
Little did she know, Zhao Huai’an was a white-eyed wolf, and in the end, it was he who led her father to be wrongly accused, ultimately losing his life!
Seeing his eldest daughter standing in front of the courtyard door, eyes red, Su Father was greatly surprised.
How could his usually strong-willed daughter be in such a state? What kind of tremendous grievance had she suffered?
“Li’er, come here, let Father take a look. Your mother said you caught a bad chill. Are you feeling better?”
Su Li stepped forward and tightly held onto Su Father’s arm, resting her head on his shoulder.
She longed to collapse into his arms and cry her heart out.
But she was also afraid of making her father suspicious.
Seeing his daughter’s abnormal behavior, Su Father glanced at his wife and then looked at the top of his daughter’s head. “What’s going on? Has your chill not recovered? Or did you catch a cold again, and are you feeling unwell?”
Su Li shook her head. “I’ve already recovered, Father. Don’t worry about me.”
Su Yue, feeling neglected, gritted her teeth.
This Su Li was getting better at pretending!
“Father, how can Sister still not be fully recovered if she’s already out and about?”
Su Li stood up and looked at Su Father. “Father, please don’t blame me. I just went to the Duke’s mansion to visit Grandmother.”
Su Father gently stroked his daughter’s hair and said, “Your mother said you’re growing up well. It seems true. You haven’t visited Grandmother in a while.”
Su Li raised her head to look at her father, sincerely admitting, “I wasn’t good before, but Aunt Xia told me that my appearance might make Grandmother and my uncle sad, so I…”
Su Father frowned. “What’s this about?”
Su Yue quickly interjected, “Father, Sister misunderstood. At the time, she had just been disfigured. Mother said she should avoid seeing them for a while, but who knew she would still be avoiding them to this day?”
Su Mother stepped forward and looked at Su Yue. “You should go back now. Your father just came home. Let him rest.”
Su Yue had a mission to complete and couldn’t leave that easily.
She looked at Su Father, feigning a pitiful expression. “Father, Mother has been ill these past few days. But since she heard you were coming back today, she insisted on getting out of bed to cook your favorite dishes. No matter how I tried to persuade her, she wouldn’t listen. You should go and see her.”
Su Li smiled lightly. “Sister, Mother is standing here in perfect health.”
Su Yue was suddenly speechless when Su Li turned her gaze to Su Mother.
Su Father’s expression darkened. “If she’s ill, she should see a doctor. I don’t need to go. It won’t help.”
Su Yue, feeling wronged, said, “Father, you’re not going? But Mother... Aunt Xia really is very ill.”
Su Mother snapped, “She wasn’t ill before, and now she’s suddenly sick just when you come back. Always this trick. Does she think we’re fools? Let’s go! I’ll bring the doctor to see her.”
Su Li silently laughed to herself. Her mother was a daughter of the Duke’s mansion, and her temper was naturally fierce.
She hadn’t paid much attention to Aunt Xia before, but since she learned that Aunt Xia might not be a good person, she no longer allowed her to act recklessly.
If Aunt Xia was genuinely ill, that would be fine. But if she was pretending, her mother wouldn’t let her get away with it.
Su Yue was stunned by Su Mother’s words.
In the past, this tactic had always worked, but today it seemed to have no effect.
“No need!” Su Yue hurriedly protested.
Thinking she had rejected too harshly, she quickly added, “Aunt Xia has already seen a doctor. I’ll go back and persuade her to rest more. Please, Father, let me leave now.”
Having failed to get Su Father to go, Su Yue left the room.
Su Li smiled as she took her mother’s arm with one hand and her father’s arm with the other, cheerfully saying, “Alright, forget about Aunt Xia. Go to the kitchen and tell them to prepare a feast for us tonight. Let’s have a nice family meal together.”
Wang Xia responded with a smile and left the courtyard.
Su Father, pleasantly surprised that his daughter wanted to dine with them, said, “This family meal... I’ve been waiting for nearly two years.”
Su Li felt a pang of guilt in her heart, but didn’t forget to tease the West Garden a little, saying, “Father, Aunt Xia said that now that I’m disfigured, if I keep appearing in front of you, you might grow to despise me, so…”
“Ridiculous!” Su Father shouted angrily. “I’ve been heartbroken enough over you; how could I despise you? She’s the one who’s becoming more and more disrespectful!”
Su Mother was both shocked and furious. She hadn’t realized that her daughter’s changes over the past two years had been influenced by that woman behind the scenes!
“Master, there’s one more thing I must tell you. The shopkeeper, Xia, from Zui Xianju, has been caught embezzling funds, and Li’er found out about it.”
Su Mother told Su Father everything about Xia Jiang’s misdeeds.
Su Father’s face darkened, his anger rising. “At first, she said her brother would help, and I saw that Xia Jiang had some skills. Over these past ten years, the Xia family had been doing well, so I agreed. But who knew something like this would happen!”
“Unacceptable! I’m going to the West Garden right now to settle this!”
Su Mother held him back. “Let’s eat first. You don’t want to go over there and eat their food, do you? I’ve never cared before, but now I won’t give them face.”
Su Father paused in his steps.
His daughter had finally agreed to dine with him, so he would take care of things later.
