A name is a word attached to someone in order to distinguish them from others.
Seen broadly, a true name is also a kind of name.
However, a true name was different in nature from a name created through language, which is a social agreement and rule.
A true name was the crystallization of identity realized by the Jin race and their descendants themselves, transcending the flow of time.
After a long span of time passes and the rules of society change or are forgotten, an ordinary name may change in how it is called or disappear entirely. But the true name sealed within the heart never changes, binding together the soul and flesh of the Jin race and their descendants.
For that reason, even though a true name could be considered a powerful weapon and material, one could not even think of bringing it out carelessly. In the first place it was not easy to draw it out, so even when one’s life was on the brink of danger it was difficult to use it like a secret trump card.
It was much the same as trying to fight using one’s own ribs or skull as a weapon, or pulling out one’s own heart to use as experimental material. Such a thing was close to impossible.
