Chapter 9.2. Homeroom Teacher

As the ceremony concluded and we left the hall, we returned to our classrooms in small groups.
In the morning, there was a bulletin board in front of the entrance dividing us into classes, and I got assigned to Class A.
Taking my seat, I glanced at the paper with today’s schedule written on it.
After this, I’ll probably have homeroom with my class and then be done.
While lost in thought, the classroom door swung open with force.
“Alright, everyone, take your seats~”
The person who entered the classroom swiftly positioned themselves in front of the lectern.
(Huh⁉)
I almost let out a word of astonishment but managed to hold back just in time.
“Nice to meet you all. I’ll be your homeroom teacher for the next year, Hayami Madoka. Let’s get along, okay?”
Lieutenant Hayami, what are you doing here⁉
A homeroom teacher⁉ Huhhh⁉
I never heard anything about this⁉
Doesn’t the higher-ups in the military know about her inclinations?
Putting someone like her in a school with minors is the last thing they should do!
As various thoughts whirled through my mind, Lieutenant Hayami looked around the classroom, and our eyes met. She smiled happily.
After that, Lieutenant Hayami said something from the lectern during homeroom, but none of it registered in my mind.
When homeroom ended, I prepared to leave and signaled to Lieutenant Hayami with my eyes.
Excitedly, she followed after me.
Initially, I thought about complaining to Takami-san the principal, but since it might attract attention, I decided to confront her directly.
When we reached a secluded area behind the school building, Lieutenant Hayami suddenly turned around.
“Long time no see, Major General Kamiya.”
“Stop with the rank at the academy.”
“I apologize, Yuu-sama. I couldn’t contain my joy at our reunion.”
Yuu-sama is definitely not okay.
“At school, it’s Kamiya-kun. We’re supposed to maintain the teacher-student relationship outwardly.”
“I understand.”
“So, how did you manage to infiltrate the academy? If you’re going to turn yourself into the police, I’ll help you out as a former superior officer.”
“I didn’t infiltrate the academy unfairly! I have proper orders!”
Lieutenant Hayami showed me a document from the personnel department issued to her.
[Lieutenant Madoka Hayami is assigned to the instructor position at Tokumu Tamashii Academy and concurrently serves as Secretary to Major General Kamiya.]
It’s not the kind of document you’d casually carry around. So Lieutenant Hayami knew I would doubt her.
“Damn… What is the personnel department thinking? Of all people, they sent someone who should be kept far away from minors…”
I rubbed my temples.
Really, what is the personnel department thinking?
Is this…?
Is this a trap set by a rival faction within the academy to discredit me by associating me with any misconduct Lieutenant Hayami might engage in with minors?
“I believe our exemplary teamwork in the long-range remote saturation bombing operation was recognized by the higher-ups.”
“But preparations for operational actions at the academy aren’t even complete yet.”
“To avoid suspicion, they assigned me from the beginning of the fiscal year.”
In any case, there’s nothing I can do about being assigned.
Perhaps Lieutenant Hayami’s inclinations are still unknown to the personnel department, or they prioritized the benefits of pairing us knowingly. Probably the latter.
In that case, the only ones at the academy who know my true identity are Takami-san and Lieutenant Hayami.
Mina knows I was in the military. But she doesn’t know about my rank as a Major General.
“Still, of all positions, why a class homeroom teacher?”
“It’s probably to avoid arousing suspicion when you’re seen together, Kamiya-sho.”
“Well, I guess that makes sense. Until we receive orders from above, I’ll play the role of instructor and student. Nice to meet you, Hayami-sensei.”
“Yeah… It’s nice being called ‘sensei’.”
“Also, it’s too unnatural to use honorifics with the students, so just be more casual.”
“Y-Yes! I understand. Got it.”
Anyway, in many ways, I want to maintain the teacher-student relationship with Lieutenant Hayami.
I don’t want to get intimate and end up coerced into baby play or something.
As I pondered these things, I suddenly heard voices arguing from beyond the corner of the school building.
Lieutenant Hayami and I exchanged glances and headed toward the source of the voices.
