Chapter 14.1. Hayami-san’s Confession
Emergency assemblies are a hassle one can’t avoid when working in the military.
It’s because I have to unexpectedly switch back into work mode even when I’m off duty.
However, this time, I wanted to express my gratitude for successfully navigating through the potentially explosive situation with Hayami-san and Mina.
“Oh, you’re here.”
“Was President Takami also summoned?”
As Hayami-san and I arrive at the academy where the assembly is being held. President Takami is waiting for us.
“It’s the first operation in the new facility of the academy. I have to be present as the head of building management.”
“I see. So, the facility we discussed earlier is completed?”
“The final adjustments are still ongoing. But it seems to be in good condition for a trial run.”
We proceed into the school building and descend into the underground facility through a hidden staircase led by President Takami.
“Creating a secret room in the academy’s basement is so cliché.”
“It can’t be helped. If it weren’t for a secluded location, we wouldn’t have been able to carry out construction openly.”
Behind the heavy door is a temporary command room packed with staff and electronic equipment.
“Compared to the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s command room, this place is quite cramped.”
“Don’t compare it to that. This facility will only be used for the three years you’re here.”
“But still… Were you all participating in a cosplay event today?”
Looking at the busy staff, some wore suits, others in work uniforms, and even some dressed as cafeteria ladies, all in outfits quite unlike military personnel.
“We don’t want to raise suspicions by having military personnel frequently coming in and out of the academy.”
Work sure is tough.
As I’m thinking about this, communication comes in from the large monitor in front of us.
“Everyone is here. Now, let me explain the operation.”
We connect remotely with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the operation details are explained.
Upon seeing the operation’s overview, I realize that the opponent is an unexpected country.
“The opponent is Country F? But aren’t they supposed to be a friendly nation on the surface?”
“It’s been discovered that they’re secretly reinforcing their base for intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at our country.”
In these turbulent times, duplicity is not uncommon.
It’s like smiling and shaking hands on the surface while kicking each other’s shins underneath, like a satirical cartoon.
“Has Japan’s acquisition of soul armor capabilities capable of long-range strikes raised concerns among the major powers?”
“I don’t understand politics or diplomacy. But in times like these, if you don’t strike when you should, you’ll quickly become prey.”
Being able to wield power when necessary is highly satisfying for the military.
In this era, as long as those with Soul Armor capabilities are in good spirits and condition, the use of military force can be easily and reasonably executed.
Some experts argue that this ease of use has prompted countries to resort to military actions easily, leading to the era of world wars.
“Understood. However, unless it’s an emergency, I’d prefer if future operations are planned for after school hours.”
“Understood. Now, let me send you the coordinates of the operation target.”
“Received. Well then, Lieutenant Hayami. Proceed with the dimensional translocation spell.”
“Yes, Major General Kamiya!”
Hayami, eagerly obeying the order, unleashes a dazzling light of the translocation spell, enveloping both me and Hayami-san.
