Light Barrier - Chapter 8: Call

Patter!

Patter!

Blood dripped.

Gu Shen gripped the ruler and wiped his face with his other hand. The flames were surging around him, and the only door leading to the roof had been shattered. As for the person who shattered the door, he was now scattered all over the roof.

Time slowed down.

To Gu Shen, one second felt as long as an hour.

He could see every angle at which the bedsheets fluttered on the roof and discern every shape of the dancing flames. He could perceive everything within his vision and sense all the living beings around him.

After he held the Ruler of Truth, his thoughts became clear, but they also became numb.

This power was not so much a gift from the gods as a transaction with devils… While you grasped the power and stared into the abyss, the abyss was staring back at you.

The orange cat fell silent and didn’t say a word as she perched on Gu Shen’s shoulder like a small sparrow. Her eyes flickered with ever-changing fluorescence as she observed the current Gu Shen.

This person is dead. Gu Shen looked at the ruined door in front of him and the blood stains, and this thought appeared in his mind. I did it…

What followed was a long period of confusion.

What now?

Over the long passage of time, countless thoughts were cut off. The answers to his repeated inquiries were all the same.

He killed himself.

Gu Shen sighed deeply, feeling as though all the strength in his body was about to be drained away… It felt as though he had experienced a century-long ordeal, but in reality, only twenty seconds had passed.

Twenty seconds later.

Gu Shen wiped the blood off his face and silently looked at the second pursuer who appeared at the end of his vision and was shocked by the bloody scene.

There were two people who wanted to kill him.

The man he had just killed should have a power that strengthened the body or something similar… He could tell from the scene of him breaking through the door lock.

He was a brute.

But now, what he saw was the complete opposite of what he saw earlier. This person was thin and not tall.

And the person who had tried to break into his apartment earlier should be this person.

At the time, he had heard the sound of the door corroding… He should grasp a similar power, so he was the culprit who started this arson.

Gu Shen looked over.

At the end of the corridor, the thin man saw that his companion had turned into a pile of mutilated body parts. His face was pale, and his voice was trembling. “What… kind of joke… is this?”

He doubted what his eyes were seeing.

Was all of this real?

On the rooftop, a young man with a ruler in his hand and thousands of blades floating behind him stared coldly at him. Just the gaze alone carried an invisible pressure…

How could this be an ordinary person?!

He’s afraid. Gu Shen saw the meaning in the man’s eyes. He’s actually afraid? Is he afraid of me… or this ruler?

He looked at the silver ruler. From the clear and bright silver ruler, he saw the current him. His familiar face had become very unfamiliar because his eyes were full of incomparably surging killing intent.

“You killed so many people… You… deserve to die…” Gu Shen heard his own voice squeezing out of his chest bit by bit.

This time, the scene he imagined was what he had just seen when he leaned over the roof… Because of the explosion, the innocent were trapped in the tide of flames and burned into charcoal.

The voice fell silent.

Whoosh!

The silver light of the Ruler of Truth suddenly erupted, and this blazing radiance instantly collided with the darkness at the end of the corridor.

Night became day!

Under the power of the Ruler of Truth, this transcendent with unimaginable power seemed to have become nothing more than an ant.

The terrified man suddenly caught fire. He screamed while patting himself crazily and even rolled on the ground. He tried to extinguish the flame, but the flame instantly erupted and engulfed him like a tide.

This was a fierce yet gentle blazing fire that only burned his body. Even when the man crashed into the wooden boards piled in the corner, only a few dim sparks splattered out before extinguishing in an instant.

This flame did not spread.

It only burned him alone.

After a few breaths, the howling arsonist was burned intto ashes by the flame he had ignited himself.

This flame that did not conform to any logic and understanding… slowly extinguished.

A miracle.

In a sense, it was a miracle.

Gu Shen gazed at this scene, watching as the flame surged in the dark corridor, slowly extinguished, and finally turned into ashes… What burned along with it every passing second was his thoughts.

It was something illusory yet undeniably real.

The man had been consumed by the flame.

His ‘thoughts’ were also being consumed by the flame.

What supported the miracle was him holding the ruler, In the depths of his consciousness, his mind was being used as fuel.

After the flame died out, only fatigue remained.

Gu Shen let out a deep breath.

His hand holding the ruler began to tremble violently, and waves of needle-like pain surged through him like a tide. He panted heavily, desperately trying to inhale fresh air. Perhaps because of the intense fire, his chest was so stuffy that he couldn’t breathe.

“A little side effect.” The orange cat emphasized the words ‘a little’ and said calmly, “You have to pay a price to summon the wind and rain like a god, right?”

“Yes.” Gu Shen chuckled hoarsely. “Thank you for reminding me.”

His overdrafted mind was constantly reminding him that it was time to let go.

But he didn’t let go of the ruler. Instead, he continued to hold it tightly while slowly raising his head to look up at the sky.

His scattered mental power condensed again.

The orange cat raised her head along with Gu Shen’s movements.

In the sky above the roof shrouded by fiery smoke, dark clouds inexplicably appeared. These dark clouds gathered together in just a few breaths, thickened, and finally enveloped the old building. Soon, a fine mist descended and then turned into a downpour of rain.

Although ridiculous, this scene was within the range of the Ruler of Truth’s usage.

“You are truly… crazy,” Chu Ling murmured softly.

Gu Shen smiled. “Can I take that as a compliment?”

He felt like a withered plant suddenly drenched by a refreshing rain or perhaps a rainstorm after a long drought.

Raindrops pattered down.

Gu Shen felt a headache. It was a real headache, hurting both inside and out.

The rainfall had squeezed out the last of his mind. At this moment, Gu Shen could no longer accurately control the size of the rain like when he created the saber domain. But judging from the howling momentum of the heavy rain, extinguishing the firestorm shouldn’t be a problem.

Having done all of this, Gu Shen reached the point where even closing his eyes caused excruciating pain.

It was indeed a deal with the devil.

After the transaction ended, not only would he be beaten back to his original state, but he would also fall into Hell.

“Meow.” The orange cat meowed.

Gu Shen’s eyes were fogged. He could hardly hold onto the ruler anymore. When Chu Ling’s voice entered his ears, it had already turned back into a cat’s meow. The heavy rain poured down, and he slumped against the wall, his consciousness gradually drifting away.

The orange cat sighed, burrowed her head into his arms, and took out his phone with her mouth.

Gu Shen’s lips were dry, and he no longer had the strength to be surprised, so he helplessly watched the orange cat dial a number for him.

Beep.

Beep.

The call connected on the second ring.

Light laughter came from the other end, as though this person had already expected that Gu Shen would call.

Gu Shen said hoarsely, “I’m in trouble… Can you help me?”

“Of course.” The voice on the other end was very relaxed. “I can handle any big trouble.”

“Really…” Gu Shen smiled tiredly. “Two scary guys wanted to kill me, but I killed them instead. This should count as self-defense… Come clean up.”

The laughter on the other end disappeared.
