While Lu Dexing went to work with the tea house, Jiang Zhou borrowed the place next to him to prepare things.
First od all, it was the milk that Lu Dalang bought for him, the man knew all kind of businessmen and had wide connection. After he listened to Jiang Zhou’s request, he helped to contact an acquaintance and brought back two large cans of fresh milk.
Jiang Zhou planned to make food for Xiao Yi. It was inconvenient to have fresh milk in the winter and even more difficult to store a milk in this era. Fresh milk could go bad and sour in a few hours. He didn’t want his baby to eat something bad and Wen Yan had little milk for Xiao Yi.
A baby was troublesome thing, he was afraid if the little thing would suck too hard and made Wen Yan uncomfortable. Especially if the child was really hungry, he would feel bad for Wen Yan.
For his child and the wife, he searched very hard in the memories about foods for baby. Then he came up with something called milk cake.
The thing was very easy to make and simple. Mix the mix with starch water evenly, stirred the pot in a low heat until there were lumps. Stirred even more until it was sticky then let it cool to solidify.
While waiting for the milk cake to cool down. He held another can of milk and heat it up, this time he let it simmering slowly and stirred occasionally. On the other hand, he grounded hazelnuts until it became fine powder.
After he smelled the tea from Lu Dexing, he chose one from local tea leaves.
Yesterday, he had prepared several small porcelain bottles with narrow mouth and long neck. The capacity was quite large. After arranging them one by one, he poured brown sugar water into the bottles, then added the tea and the warm milk. He stirred a little and added hazelnut powder. This way, a simple homemade milk tea was done.
He handed the first cup to Lu Dalang and mentioned him to try it.
Lu Dalang looked at it for a long time, “… how do I drink this?”
Although the small porcelain bottle was beautiful but the mouth was too small and the lower base was a big round shape. If you drank it upside, the liquid would flow all over your body.
Jiang Zhou slapped his head and remembered the thing he had forgotten. He took out two wood straw from his cloth bag and handed it to Lu Dalang.
This was something he picked from the river, He saw there was a cluster of reeds on the bank, a straight reed could be used a natural straw as long as you removed the leaves and cleaned it up.
When handing it to Lu Dalang, Jiang Zhou reminded him, “Be careful. You suck it slowly, lest you burn your tongue.”
The milk wasn’t too hot, it was a little warm. But from his observation after their many dinners, Lu Dalang was the type with cat tongue and afraid of eating something hot.
Lu Dalang took a sip and didn’t speak for a while.
“How is it?”
“It tastes good but…” Lu Dalang frowned, “It’s too sweet for me.”
He didn’t like sweet foods. Although this drink tasted great but the sweetness was a little too much for him. The tea was good enough to cover up the fishy smells of the milk.
Jiang Zhou’s face didn’t change, “Oh, I forgot. I made this according to my wife’s taste. He likes sweet things.”
After that he ignored Lu Dalang twisted expression and carried out the remaining two bottles.
Well, it was the time to pick up his wife from the boat.
When he arrived at the dock, Wen Yan was getting off from uncle Yu’s boat. This autumn was a little windy, so Wen Yan put on a green coat. The clothes he had on was wrapped in three layers.
Jiang Zhou walked over quickly and took Xiao Yi from Wen Yan’s arms then handed him the bottle, “Here.”
“What is it?” Wen Yan touched the warm bottle, it felt nice in his hands after blowing up the cold winds on the boat.
“Milk tea.” Jiang Zhou smiled at him, “The weather is getting colder. You came here by the boat; it must be really cold. So, I made this for you. Suck it with the straw, see if you like it.”
Wen Yan hesitated and took a sip. First, there was a smell of milk mixed with brown sugar water. He didn’t know how Jiang Zhou removed the fishy smells but the sweetness was perfect for him. The milk and sweetness mixed together created a delicious taste.
If you drink it carefully, there was vague taste of tea but it was mild and wasn’t bitter. Furthermore, the drink was still warm, when Wen Yan swallowed it in big gulp, he could feel his whole chest and stomach warmed up.
Wen Yan held the bottle like a hamster and took another two sips then let go of the straw, “Why is the milk not smelly at all?”
When he boiled warm milk for Xiao Yi to drink, he usually added salt to suppress the smell. He cooked very little of milk, so the smell wasn’t very strong but when Xiao Yi tasted the fishy smell, he wouldn’t drink the milk.
He was worried about it for a long time and worked hard to get rid of the smells. He carefully boiled the milk so Xiao Yi would drink it.
Jiang Zhou knew what he was thinking, but shook his head at him, “I think it was the milk and tea mixed. The two complement each other and the taste is more mellow but it cannot be given to Xiao Yi. The tea contained strong flavor; Xiao Yi is too young to drink it.”
What Jiang Zhou said made sense, Wen Yan nodded at him.
“But if you really wanted to try. You could grind nuts into powder and boil it together with the milk. It may help with the smells.”
After listening for a while, Wen Yan suddenly asked, “How do you know so much?”
He knew Jiang Zhou well, both of them were raised in the village and he grew up with him. Jiang Zhou always talk to him about everything. There was no secret between them, so it was weird for him to suddenly talked about new knowledge.
Wen Yan actually was scared to ask and never dared to confirm whether the man in front of him was his husband or not.
From the moment he heard about the sponge cake, Wen Yan had many doubts in his heart. But Jiang Zhou didn’t say anything so Wen Yan didn’t dare to start. Although he was careful around Jiang Zhou but he couldn’t help to be closer to the man.
He was always on guard with him, but maybe because of the milk tea or the way Jiang Zhou treated Xiao Yi so gently. He had the courage to ask.
Jiang Zhou’s face showed a little helpless expression, “I told you when I first wake up.”
Wen Yan was stunned and thought about it. It seemed that Jiang Zhou said something about he wasn’t himself for a year. Was it true he got possessed?
He didn’t believe it at that time, but now, Jiang Zhou looked very credible.
Jiang Zhou saw Wen Yan thought hard while unconsciously sipping his milk tea, he felt really helpless and handed another bottle to him, “I dare to swear it, what I said back then was really the truth!”
Wen Yan said nothing and didn’t reply. He was thinking about it.
