Shin Yoosung
Shin Yoosung is one of Kim Dokja’s and Yoo Joonghyuk’s companions, and the child who, in another round, would become the dreaded Disaster of Floods. Originally a character from Ways of Survival, she joins Kim Dokja’s side as both his incarnation and a symbol of the futures he seeks to change.
Appearance
Shin Yoosung is a young girl, slightly taller than Lee Gilyoung when they first meet. She has short brown hair that frames her round cheeks, and striking red eyes that stand out against her cute, almost Western features. Though her expression is often gentle, there is a weight in her gaze that belies the harsh choices she has already made to survive.
Personality
Compared to others her age, Shin Yoosung appears polite and composed, but she is far from sheltered. She can be stubborn, quick-tempered, and fiercely competitive — especially with Lee Gilyoung. Yet beneath this childish bravado lies a loyal and caring heart. She views herself as responsible for others, often pushing herself to act maturely in situations where no child should have to.
Her survival has bred a cunning and calculating nature. She has betrayed trust, taken lives, and committed acts that conflict with her innate sense of justice — all in order to endure. This duality leaves her vulnerable to self-doubt, guilt, and a lingering fear that she is, at her core, a “bad person.”
History
Before the scenarios, Shin Yoosung lived with her parents and her beloved dog. That life ended brutally in the first scenario, when she was forced to kill her dog to survive. Not long after, her parents also died. Alone and desperate, she clawed her way through the early scenarios — stealing, fighting, and sacrificing others to protect her place in the green zones.
By the time Kim Dokja finds her, she is already hardened by these experiences, a child who has done terrible things just to keep breathing.
Synopsis
Main Scenario 5
Shin Yoosung first crosses paths with Kim Dokja’s group during Main Scenario 5, when she approaches to thank them for sharing food. Later that night, she returns with a blanket, worried that they might be cold. Han Sooyoung sees through her disguise and realizes she is the future Disaster of Floods. Conflict brews — but instead of killing her, Kim Dokja reaches out.
Haunted by the thought of her destiny, Yoosung asks him if she is already a bad person. Kim Dokja answers not with judgment but with trust: he offers her a contract to become his incarnation. She accepts, binding herself to him as her sponsor.
To awaken her potential, Kim Dokja stages his own injury in the Han River, forcing Yoosung into a moment of crisis. Through this, she evolves and gains the attribute Beast Lord.
Together with Lee Gilyoung, she bickers and competes for Kim Dokja’s attention, but their rivalry soon becomes a bond forged through shared survival.
Dark Castle
In the Dark Castle, Yoo Joonghyuk traps Yoosung and Gilyoung in the basement of Paradise, surrounding them with monsters to push them to grow stronger. There, the two of them tame the Chimera Dragon using the Ancient Beast’s fruit and unleash it against Reinheit von Djerba.
Later, when forced to fight Kim Dokja as the “Demon King,” Yoosung hesitates, unable to strike him. But under his command, she summons the Chimera Dragon, with Gilyoung by her side.
Aftermath
Following Kim Dokja’s death, Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung are shattered. They sink into grief, clinging to fragments of hope. Together, they invent a game: flipping a coin to decide whether Kim Dokja is alive or not. It is a child’s comfort, fragile yet vital, to endure the emptiness he leaves behind.
