The Country Life Diary of a Gangster's Secretary - c65
The next morning. Dohyun woke up early. Since he didn’t have much trouble waking up in the morning originally, after coming here, it became a daily routine for Dohyun to get up early and enter the kitchen. He had originally intended to stay only for a month, but he was thinking of staying a little longer because he enjoyed living with Hyeseong here so much.
Of course, when he told Hyeseong this thought, he grumbled that he should at least pay rent, but Dohyun knew well. He knew his friend’s heart that didn’t sincerely kick him out while doing so.
After washing up, Dohyun hurried to the kitchen. Since Hyeseong had many difficult things happen to him, he was going to feed him heartily. Just as he was about to wash and trim the ingredients, someone knocked on the door.
“Oh, you startled me.”
The surprised Dohyun almost dropped the knife. Bokshil, who was sleeping in the living room, also jumped up. Who could it be? Who would visit Hyeseong’s house at this early hour in the first place? Dohyun swallowed nervously without realizing it.
Especially with that incident happening recently, his heart shriveled even more. While Dohyun was worrying, the person outside knocked on the door one more time.
Could it be Kim Doo-sung or someone like that, the person who kidnapped Hyeseong? But Hyeseong said that person had already been caught by the police.
Dohyun thought about waking up Hyeseong, but shook his head. Then, as if he had made up his mind, he approached the living room window. He slightly lifted the undrawn curtain, stuck his head out, and looked toward the front door.
He was going to check the other person before opening the door. But strangely, no one was standing there. For a moment, goosebumps rose on the back of Dohyun’s neck. It was a problem if someone was there, but in fact, wouldn’t it be more of a problem if no one was there?
That’s when it happened. When Dohyun was still rolling his eyes back and forth.
Knock knock.
The sound of knocking on the glass window was heard, and Dohyun’s head slowly turned upward.
“Ahh!”
And the startled Dohyun fell backwards. Because Ihyeok was standing there with a look as if he found it pathetic.
Dohyun quickly got up, dusted himself off, and opened the door.
“Doing comedy from the morning?”
“Ah, no. I didn’t know it was you, CEO…”
Dohyun scratched his head awkwardly as if embarrassed.
“But what brings you here?”
“To check on Hyeseong. And to get some breakfast while I’m at it.”
“I see. But Hyeseong is still sleeping. He’s been tired since being discharged from the hospital, so he’s been waking up late these days. Should I wake him up?”
“No need. Just try waking him up and see what happens.”
Ihyeok sat at the kitchen table with a warning not to wake him up and that he would see him when he got up. Dohyun also naturally brewed Ihyeok’s coffee as if it flowed like water now.
“Umm… I have to prepare breakfast now, so…”
Ihyeok waved his hand roughly. It meant not to mind him and do it.
After that, Dohyun began to prepare the meal diligently while glancing at Ihyeok’s mood. He drank coffee as if he was really uninterested and took business calls in between.
After finishing the call and returning to his seat, Ihyeok was lost in thought while looking at Dohyun’s busy back.
“Park Dohyun.”
“Yes… Yes?”
Dohyun turned around, startled.
“Am I going to eat you or something? Why do you make such a fuss every time I call you?”
“Haha, I’m sorry. I’m a scaredy-cat to the point where I often hear that I have a bean-sized liver. But what is it?”
“Thank you.”
“…Excuse me?”
Dohyun widened his eyes and made an unbelievable expression. The person who said it was nonchalant.
“For contacting me that day. And for taking care of Hyeseong too.”
“CEO, did you take something wrong by any chance?”
“Do you want to die? When someone is expressing gratitude. Keep taking care of Hyeseong like that from now on too. If anything happens, tell me right away.”
Only then did Dohyun’s expression brighten greatly when he realized that Ihyeok was sincerely expressing gratitude. While bragging that he would take good care of Hyeseong until he died, he eventually got scolded though.
“But you’re a beta, right?”
“Pardon? Ah, yes, that’s right. But how did you know?”
Dohyun tilted his head, as he had never mentioned anything like his type.
“I can just tell.”
Ihyeok replied roughly.
Well, in fact, discerning a person’s type wasn’t that difficult. With that physique, the possibility of being an omega was low, so it was either an alpha or a beta, and if he was also an alpha, there was no way Ihyeok wouldn’t have been able to tell.
Until now, he was only paying attention to Hyeseong, so he didn’t try to figure out that guy, but if he was a beta, there was a high possibility that he wasn’t in a romantic relationship with Hyeseong who had become an omega.
Moreover, that hotel too. If Hyeseong was in that kind of relationship with that guy, there was no reason to get a room in Seoul to enjoy themselves. There was no need to go all the way there and do such a troublesome thing when they had a house, right?
“You said you were friends with Hyeseong since college?”
“Yes! In college, I wanted to be friends with Hyeseong, so I followed him around all the time.”
Dohyun sat across from Ihyeok, with breakfast preparations pushed to the back of his mind.
“Why?”
“Well, Hyeseong seemed really cool to me back then. Unlike me, he was smart, wise, confident, and decisive! They say people are attracted to those who are the exact opposite of themselves, you know.”
Dohyun added that one of his nicknames in college was Cheon Hyeseong’s No. 1 fan, that’s how much he admired him.
“So you like Hyeseong?”
“Yes! Of course I like him.”
Dohyun nodded vigorously as if asking why he was asking such an obvious thing. Ihyeok read the emotion in that momentary expression and eyes. It was the face of someone who simply liked the other person as a friend. It wasn’t the kind of affection or love that Ihyeok was thinking of.
At first, the person who was considered the most likely culprit to have left a kiss mark on Hyeseong’s neck was none other than that guy. He also speculated that there must have been an impure motive for crawling into this house, saying it was a month-long stay or whatever.
But thinking about it, the behavior Dohyun had shown so far seemed to fit better as coming from stupidly kind friendship rather than love.
“You’re out of the question.”
It seemed like a waste of time to suspect Dohyun. Still, he was a bit relieved that the person living closest to Hyeseong wasn’t him.
“Excuse me? Why am I out of the question?”
“Nevermind. You said you hung out with Hyeseong throughout college?”
“Yes.”
“Then… Hyeseong didn’t have anyone he dated or gave off that kind of vibe in college?”
At that question, Dohyun suddenly started coughing as if he choked. Of course he would be flustered to be asked such a question by the person his friend had an unrequited love for since college. But Ihyeok interpreted Dohyun’s behavior differently. As his eyes narrowed with suspicion, Dohyun quickly waved his hand.
“There was nothing like that. Not a single one. Really.”
“Nothing?”
“Yes! As you may know, Hyeseong was, how should I put it… He had zero interest in dating or anything like that. He’s still like that now, but it was even more so in college. Back then, Hyeseong was only interested in maintaining his grades, studying, assignments, and things like that.”
“Are you sure?”
When Ihyeok asked with a highly vigilant attitude, Dohyun became anxious. He suddenly worried that this person might find out about Hyeseong’s feelings.
“Of course! Why would I lie? Ah, to what extent was Hyeseong serious about studying!”
Dohyun quickly racked his brain. The countless college life he spent with Hyeseong quickly flashed through his mind.
“Even when it wasn’t exam season, he would go straight to the library during free periods, and also on festival days, guess what, he would only participate in department events and go straight home! Do you know why he did that? He did all that to go home and review.”
Ihyeok just silently listened to Dohyun’s story.
“Ah! And there was a time when Hyeseong joined the same club as me. It was an English conversation club, and at the first new member welcoming party, Hyeseong got totally wasted there. After that, he made a fuss saying he didn’t know this club he joined to learn English would only drink like this, and that he was going to quit!”
Dohyun then relayed in great detail the episode where he and the club seniors had to mobilize to persuade Hyeseong to stay on the condition that they wouldn’t make him drink at gatherings.
“That was probably the most drunk Hyeseong has ever been in his life. Haha.”
“I know.”
“Huh?”
“I said I know. How drunk Hyeseong was then.”
Dohyun tilted his head. He wondered how Ihyeok knew that story, but then thought that Hyeseong might have told him.
“No, but back then, Hyeseong’s face was all red and he was picking fights with the seniors. Just thinking about it still scares me. But fortunately, the seniors really adored Hyeseong like that.”
Dohyun seemed to have forgotten the purpose of emphasizing that Hyeseong didn’t have a lover, and began to talk about the past with excitement.
“What were you doing not taking care of the kid then?”
“Ah, well, I wasn’t in my right mind either at that time, so I didn’t have a chance to look after Hyeseong. Then at one point, I noticed Hyeseong was gone. But he came back fine the next day. I was worried, but I was so relieved that he seemed to have gone home safely on his own.”
Then, as if remembering his original duty, Dohyun began to beautifully package that Hyeseong was so serious about studying that he could attend properly the next day even after drinking to the point of losing consciousness.
Through Dohyun’s story, Ihyeok also suddenly remembered that day. Dohyun was mistaken that Hyeseong went home safely alone, but in fact, that wasn’t the case.
