A whole week had passed since that incident. Fortunately or unfortunately, he hadn’t run into Ihyeok during that time. The lights hadn’t been on in the house next door for quite a while. Hyeseong naturally thought about whether Ihyeok was avoiding him, but when he heard from Dohyun that he had left for an urgent business trip to England, he was inwardly relieved.
Why was he relieved? About what was he relieved? He wasn’t sure. He just felt fortunate that Ihyeok wasn’t avoiding him. Even though he himself was only scheming to avoid Ihyeok somehow.
It seemed Ihyeok was going on the England business trip he couldn’t go on last time because he was busy saving Hyeseong. He heard that from Dohyun. When he curiously asked how he knew, Dohyun said he got a message. Ihyeok said he would be gone for about three days and to tell Hyeseong if he asked.
When Dohyun asked why he didn’t tell him directly, he just got scolded not to ask useless questions. Dohyun complained, saying if he was going to be like that, wouldn’t it be a hundred or thousand times more efficient for him to say it himself.
But when Hyeseong told him to say that confidently in front of Ihyeok, he quickly became a docile lamb.
“You and the CEO have both been weird lately.”
Dohyun started grumbling while making dinner.
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“Is something going on between you two? Are you keeping secrets from me?”
He was quick to notice things in strange places, that guy. But fortunately, he didn’t seem to figure out that it was because the two suddenly kissed.
“It’s not like that. It’s just a bit awkward after making up.”
Tsk, Dohyun still had a sulky face, but he nodded and let it go.
Hyeseong secretly sighed behind Dohyun who was preparing the ingredients.
Actually, he was just as frustrated and confused.
* * *
Hyeseong got on a bus heading to Seoul for the first time in a while. Today was the day of his regular check-up at the hospital. He made an excuse to Dohyun saying he was going to meet his aunt in Seoul. As expected, Dohyun whined and begged to take him along, saying he wanted to see his aunt’s face after a long time. But when Hyeseong said he wanted to be alone with her since he was meeting her after a long time too, Dohyun smiled and sent him off, telling him to have a good trip.
He needed to tell Dohyun about his type too, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. Of course, Dohyun was a beta so it wouldn’t be a problem at all, and he didn’t have narrow-minded thoughts about types either.
So if Hyeseong told him he was actually an omega and had a late awakening, he would definitely accept it even if he was a bit surprised.
What made Hyeseong hesitate was the question of why. He just hadn’t come up with a suitable excuse yet for what to say when asked why his type changed now of all times.
After all, it would be hard to say that getting involved with Ihyeok during his rut was the trigger.
Hyeseong headed straight to the hospital after arriving in Seoul. Seeing Dohyun send him a cafe gift certificate to eat with his aunt made him feel slightly guilty. It seemed better to buy something before going in.
After checking in at the hospital, it wasn’t long before Hyeseong went into the examination room. But now that he had done it a few times, he was used to it.
“Hello, doctor.”
“Hyeseong, have you been well?”
The doctor greeted Hyeseong with a smile. Perhaps because he belonged to a unique case even among patients, the doctor took especially good care of Hyeseong. Well, if he awakened as an omega in his twenties, it would be natural to feel sympathetic as a type and specialist doctor.
“How have you been recently?”
“I occasionally get headaches, but they’re not as severe as before.”
“I see. Your body is slowly adapting to the changed type, so those symptoms will completely disappear over time.”
After that, the doctor explained the test results in detail. According to the test results, the pheromone levels had slightly increased compared to last time, but the magnitude of change didn’t seem to be large. It was clear evidence that he was entering a stable period.
“By the way, have the people around you said anything separately? About pheromones, I mean. When your type is fully established, you’ll be able to sufficiently control emitting pheromones, but it will still be difficult for you, Hyeseong. You may leak pheromones even if you don’t want to. If you’ve heard anything that could be helpful in the examination process, please let me know.”
“Well… I’m not sure.”
Hyeseong searched his memory. Dohyun was a beta, so it was impossible for him to smell Hyeseong’s pheromones in the first place. Moreover, Hyeseong was currently living in the countryside with very few people, so he didn’t have much contact with others.
“I don’t think I’ve heard anything related to pheromones.”
“Hmm, really? That’s strange. With these levels, pheromones would have definitely leaked out even for you, Hyeseong, who has difficulty controlling it. Could it be that you don’t have many alpha or omega acquaintances around you?”
Alpha or omega. There was one person who came to Hyeseong’s mind. Kwon Ihyeok. He was the only alpha Hyeseong had encountered a lot recently. But Ihyeok hadn’t said anything like that. If pheromones had definitely come from him, he would have found it strange and mentioned it.
“Doctor, could it be that pheromones aren’t coming from me?”
Then the doctor shook his head firmly.
“Normally, with these levels, pheromones are supposed to flow out externally. Even in the X-ray taken today, your pheromone gland is properly open, Hyeseong. Try to think back and remember carefully.”
Hyeseong quickly racked his brain. Then one incident came to mind. The hotel he went to last time to expose Kim Doo-sung’s corruption to Ahn Gi-baek. Didn’t a passerby say to Hyeseong, who had come out after unexpectedly being insulted by Ahn Gi-baek there, that there was an omega walking around the hotel leaking pheromones?
Hyeseong unknowingly clenched his fists. Then the doctor’s words were correct. That Hyeseong was currently emitting pheromones. But then what? Why did Ihyeok…
“As you said, doctor, there was an instance like that… But I haven’t heard anything like that from my alpha acquaintance.”
“Even if pheromones are being emitted, your body is still adapting to the changed type, so the concentration will be faint. It’s natural for alphas to react sensitively to omega pheromones, but exceptions exist. There’s a growing trend of people who aren’t interested in that aspect. If it’s a weak level, there will be people who don’t feel it.”
It certainly made sense. Hyeseong and Ihyeok had been together for 6 years, and Hyeseong didn’t tell him that he had awakened as an omega. If Ihyeok didn’t know that, he definitely wouldn’t think pheromones would come from Hyeseong, whom he thought was a beta.
“So are you saying that even if pheromones are coming from me, the other person may not properly recognize it with their head?”
“That’s right. Since you’re a case who fully awakened after becoming an adult, Hyeseong, that possibility is high too.”
The doctor added that the pheromone concentration would also increase over time.
“Um, doctor, could it be… that even if the other person doesn’t recognize it with their head, their body can feel it?”
Hyeseong asked carefully. Perhaps thinking it was a bit of an unexpected question, the doctor slightly pushed up his glasses and became lost in thought. But he didn’t ask for a specific reason.
“Of course. It’s almost instinctive for alphas and omegas to have their bodies react to each other’s pheromones.”
The kiss incident from that day came to Hyeseong’s mind.
Hyeseong can’t control his pheromones. He doesn’t have that ability yet, so when his emotions fluctuate greatly, pheromones leak out without him realizing it.
If, on that day, Ihyeok suddenly pressed his lips against him because pheromones came from his body, which was emotionally shaken due to contact with Ihyeok, everything would be explained.
Ihyeok had simply acted according to his instincts as an alpha.
“Doctor, what’s a good way to control pheromones?”
It was fortunate for him in a way that even if pheromones had come out, Ihyeok hadn’t noticed yet.
But it was dangerous if more time passed than this. As the doctor said, if the pheromone concentration became stronger and he emitted them without realizing it, the possibility that Ihyeok would lose his reason and act again couldn’t be ruled out.
So he needs to control it. Somehow. Hyeseong didn’t want to get hurt twice by a coincidence that occurred because he was true to his instincts.
* * *
After returning home, Hyeseong headed to the neighborhood pub to appease Dohyun’s mood. It seemed Dohyun had a lot of complaints about being caught between Ihyeok and Hyeseong, so this was to soothe him. Perhaps because they were having an event to celebrate the opening, the store was quite crowded.
The two found a suitable spot and clinked glasses for the first time in a while. As if to relieve the stress that had built up in the meantime, Dohyun drank more than usual. Hyeseong only ate snacks with a complicated heart and didn’t even touch the alcohol.
Eventually, along with the piling up soju bottles, Dohyun’s posture gradually collapsed and he completely passed out. Fortunately it was the neighborhood. Hyeseong came out with difficulty, carrying his tall friend while receiving the owner’s pitiful gaze.
“So stop fighting, Hyeseong. Ugh, I’m going to die because of you and the CEO.”
But I said we didn’t fight.
Even though Hyeseong tried to take Dohyun with difficulty, the height difference couldn’t be ignored. Moreover, the drunken Dohyun was quite a handful. It was hard to even take a step forward as he whined that he wouldn’t go and that he would drink more, twisting his body this way and that.
“Hey, stay still for a bit… huh?”
As he was practically dragging Dohyun and supporting him, Dohyun suddenly swung his arm in excitement, causing Hyeseong to trip over his foot.
Hyeseong, who rolled on the ground with Dohyun, gritted his teeth. It was a mistake to think of appeasing him. He would make him write a ten-page reflection when he woke up tomorrow.
Hyeseong sighed deeply and looked at the handful sprawled out next to him. He had to take him somehow, but it seemed hopeless.
That’s when it happened. A familiar car slid in front of the store. The window rolled down and a similarly familiar face appeared.
“Are you two filming a drama or something?”
Ihyeok looked down at Hyeseong as if asking what he was doing there.
