Chapter 5.2. I Knew I’m The New Mob Character

[Dark Arrow]

Light transformed into a dark arrow and flew towards me. I twisted my body to dodge, but it was already too late. It hit my right shoulder, gouging through my flesh. The recoil sent me flying.

“Ugh…”

My small body rolled, and I fell face-down on the floor. I didn’t know where it hurt anymore. Everything hurt.

“Damn it, for me to lose to someone like Wraith…”

I realized that I was going to die. I had confused the game with reality. I had even considered the possibility of awakening in this novel’s world. I had been foolish, and it made me want to cry.

Despite being in a novel’s world, this was reality. I was just a mob character. I was nothing more than a background character who would get reported as a dead kindergarten kid in tomorrow’s news. I had failed.

I couldn’t move a muscle anymore. It was over, and I was about to lose consciousness when a sudden thought crossed my mind.

In a game, I could open the status screen by tapping a button and taking a potion from the item box.

I recalled a game from my previous life, released alongside the novel’s completion. I held a controller and played it like a maniac, despite my age.

With an imaginary controller in my hand, I pressed the button.

I imagined it.

I realized it.

I was just a mob character.

Because…

-Please select your job-

In my consciousness, a semi-transparent board appeared before my eyes, displaying a peculiar message. Well, it’s not weird. I had seen this before.

It was the character creation screen at the beginning of the game. You’d choose your name, character appearance, and my job. That would conclude character creation.

“I see. I messed up. I was in the middle of character creation.”

I kept my fading consciousness and imagined the controller. No, I only thought about it, and the cursor moved.

Several known jobs appeared. There were no hidden jobs, but it displayed basic jobs and premium jobs.

I had to choose only one now. I had to choose the only job that could save me.

“Confirm.”

I muttered quietly. The message on the board changed.

-Character creation has been completed-

-Enjoy your Night of Magic, special just for you-

“Oh, I’ll enjoy it. The magical night. Until the dawn comes.”

I grinned slyly. It was time to fight back.

Wraith was a monster with nothing but hatred and a desire to kill the living. It was a monster that had escaped from a recently made undead dungeon. It was satisfied with possessing a body that had a weak mind but strong magic. With this body, it could kill and feast on many humans, reveling in the pleasure of it.

This particular Wraith had more intelligence than the others. So, when the dungeon was created, the intelligent Wraith could escape.

Surprisingly, it had some trouble dealing with a small human, but now that the human lay motionless on the floor. Her body was lying in a pool of blood, and they were likely dead.

The original owner of this body realized what had happened and screamed in sorrow in her head. However, that only brought joy to Wraith.

It had a grotesque, terrifying smile, which replaced its previously elderly-looking face. Now, it looked around, ready to kill other humans. There were still plenty of people left, and none of them emitted any magic power. It would be easy to kill them all. Killing them all might even allow Wraith to evolve further, its instincts whispered.

However, its steps suddenly came to a halt. Until now, it had sensed no magic power from this small human. But now, it felt a new magic power.

“?”

Wraith was sensitive to magic power. It could sense even the faintest traces of it. And yet, even though it hadn’t sensed a shred of it until a few moments ago, it was puzzled by the new magic power.

It’s looking for the new presence of magic, and feels it from the small human it thought was dead. It was a small magic power. It was impossible. It’s impossible for magic power to be born suddenly. It knows magic power doesn’t come out of nowhere. Even if humans can’t use magic, they still have their magic power. That is what Wraith sensed.

[Minor Heal]

A faint whisper came from the seemingly dead human. To Reis, it was the arch-enemy—light. A gentle, white light enveloped the human’s body and rapidly healed them. Her slashed left arm and right shoulder gouged by [Dark Arrow] were both restored. The previously injured skin became pristine once more.

Additionally, the human’s hair, which had been black, gradually turned gray. Sparkling, pure white particles filled the air, giving their hair a beautiful silvery platinum appearance.

They stood up when the human placed their small hand on the floor.

“Oh damn, I really screwed up, didn’t I? So, that’s what being a mob means, huh? I see.”

Mumbling incomprehensible things in a low voice, the human turned their attention towards Reis.

“It’s not a tutorial, but I’ll kill you. You’ll be my first prey.”

The small human faced off against Wraith with a grin like that of a fierce beast.
